KVM is a virtualization technology that only works with Linux as host operating system; if your host operating system is Windows 7 this post is not very useful for you.

If your objective is to run Debian or any other linux under Windows 7, then you should give a try to VirtualBox, a desktop virtualization tool that also supports Windows 7 as host. I'm pretty sure any linux can run as guest OS under VirtualBox.

If on the other hand you want to exercise KVM, then you need to set up a linux box for that.

I have windows 7. But I want to setup KVM on my desktop and virtualize either RedHat or the nearest equivalent of it on my desktop (ie. would that be CentOs or Scientific Linux or Debian?)

How can you do that? Using the KVM is part of the RHCSA exam i think (at least everyone says it is LOL) so learning how to use it is important.

Regards.

Books as a medium to store information are on the way to obsolecense the way clay tablets and the cuneiform script have gone. But books were helpful to give a physical place in our world to information stored in our brains (associating things to remember with physical things is a well known mnemotechnical trick). While we transition to virtualized, unphysical information storage media, the challenge is to find new ways to leave a dried flower in a certain page, underline with a certain color, stack books related to a certain topic on the far edge of the desk...

The issues caused by kvm-clock clocksource are reported in https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=570824 and https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=584310 mentioned above; some trial and error helped - systematically checking logs and strace didnt'd !

very cool, seems to do the trick; thank you!
I'm running squeeze on squeeze, hung 3 of 4 times during boot;
would you mind posting how you tracked this down?
after checking the logs but before starting strace I tried your solution :) otherwise ... no idea

Thanks, you've saved me a lot of time! My windows guest with 4 virtual cores works ok but debian guest with 1 core behave strange after suspending/resuming. I can't ssh to it, some programs work in tty1 but nothing starts in Xvnc, browsing with graphical file manager results in its freeze and so on. Somehow I noticed that clock doesn't tick in guest. I have current date/time as RPROMPT and it didn't change at all and date command confirmed it. So I googled a bit and found your post. After setting acpi_pm as the clocksource the guest instantly unfreezed (without any reboot) and started working. It's not that big problem because rebooting the host doesn't happen often but anyway that was a bit frustrating.
